The rusty nail: Immersion work
The rusty nail
On the 15 of June 2017, a quarter of lc7's class learnt chemistry. One of the exercises was to put a nail in a glass of salt water, and another in glass of fresh water. We had to write up a hypothesis of what we thought would rust faster, and I thought salt would. We waited five days, recording different changes that we saw, and on the fifth day took the nails out. most of the class, even the LA was surprised to realize that fresh water actually rusted faster. This was a surprise to me, for as our LA Nicole said when you take your boat out of the ocean you rinse it down with fresh water. So this was rather puzzling.
